Wall paint – guide to choosing the right option for a beautiful and durable finish

Wall paint is more than just colour; it's finish, durability, washability and a healthy indoor climate. At Kvali.dk you'll find professional solutions for every room – from matt, beautiful finishes in your living room to extra wipeable qualities in hallways and children's bedrooms. We also supply accessories and surface preparation products, so you achieve a uniform, hard-wearing result from the first brushstroke.

01Why choose quality wall paint?
  • Beautiful finish and colour depth – better coverage and uniform gloss.

  • Higher durability – easier to clean (see EN 13300 wash classes).

  • Healthier indoor climate – option of Swan Label/EU Ecolabel products.

02Gloss guide: how to choose the right gloss for your walls

Gloss ranges in practice from matt (5–7) to soft matt (10) and satin (20+). Higher gloss = more light reflection and easier wiping.

Recommendations by room (guidance only):

  • Living room/bedroom: gloss 5–10 depending on desired look and cleaning needs.

  • Hallway/children's bedroom: gloss 7–10 for extra wipability.

  • Kitchen/dining room: gloss 10–20 for better cleaning around high-wear areas.

  • Bathroom/wet areas: use wet room system/higher gloss according to current guidelines.

03Coverage and consumption (how much paint you'll need)

As a rough guide, wall paint covers approximately 8–10 m² per litre per coat. Most projects require 2 coats (so calculate realistically 4–5 m² per litre total). Untreated and absorbent walls use more.

Quick calculation: wall area = (room perimeter × ceiling height) minus doors/windows.

Eco-labels and indoor climate

  • Swan Label wall paint: stringent requirements for emissions, coverage and durability – with a focus on low environmental impact.

  • EU Ecolabel (EU Flower): joint EU criteria for environment and performance; helps you choose a responsible product.

How to achieve a professional finish – step by step

  1. Preparation: Wash walls, remove loose paint. Fill/scrape uneven areas and sand lightly.

  2. Priming: Use primer on absorbent/patchy surfaces for even absorption and better adhesion.

  3. First coat: Roll/brush wet-on-wet. Keep a wet edge.

  4. Light sanding between coats if needed.

  5. Second coat: Achieve full coverage and correct sheen.

  6. Aftercare: Wait the recommended time before cleaning the new surface (see product sheet).

Product selection – how to match your needs to the right product

  • Matt wall paint (sheen 5–7): beautiful, subtle finish for living rooms and bedrooms.

  • Wipeable wall paint (sheen 7–10): hallways, children's rooms, corridors.

  • Extra durable (sheen 20–25) (EN 13300 class 1): high-traffic areas, walls that are regularly wiped down.

  • Blocking solution: for nicotine/soot/staining – use blocking primer and finish with wall paint.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Which sheen should I choose?
Sheen 5–10 covers most walls. Higher sheen = more wipeable. Choose based on the room and cleaning requirements.

What does EN 13300 class 1–5 mean?
This is the standard for, among other things, wet scrub resistance; class 1 is most durable for cleaning.

How much paint will I need?
Allow for 8–10 m²/litre per coat, usually 2 coats. Porous walls use more.

Is the Swan Label/EU Ecolabel necessary?
Not a requirement, but a good choice for lower emissions and proven performance/durability.
